Dear Families,
Thank you to all who participated in the WSSD MLK day of service on Monday! On Tuesday, The WES staff participated in professional development which included a review and update of safety protocols and emergency procedures. As part of our ongoing work on safety, we will again be reviewing with students what to do during emergency drills. We will schedule another practice drill for the end of this month, during the week of January 30th, to practice our processes and evaluate how well they continue to work.
Speaking of evaluating progress, student report cards will be released via PowerSchool on January 27th at 4:30pm. They will be scheduled to go to the registered email connected to PowerSchool. Also, on January 27th we will have the return of our in-person Bingo Night. Currently our 1st session is sold out and we have limited seating in session 2. Please sign-up below if you are interested!

The Gift of Giving on Valentine’s Day
Once again, WES students will be participating in a school-wide community service project as part of their classroom Valentine’s Day parties on Tuesday, February 14th.
During their parties, students will be drawing pictures to be delivered with “Breakfast Bags” for Caring for Friends, a Philadelphia non-profit organization that provides free home-cooked meals to isolated, homebound individuals. They will then assemble the breakfast bags with donated food items and the pictures they make during the class parties.
We are asking the WES community to donate the Breakfast Bag items. Below is a list of items assigned to each grade:
- KINDERGARTEN: Individually wrapped tea bags (like Bigelow) or hot chocolate packets
- 1st GRADE: Boxes of raisins or containers of pudding or fruit cups (no applesauce please, foil covers can be easily punctured.)
- 2nd GRADE: Small cereal boxes or single-serving packets of oatmeal.
- 3rd GRADE: Juice boxes
- 4th GRADE: Cereal bars, granola bars or oatmeal squares
- 5th GRADE: Packaged peanut butter or cheese crackers
Beginning Monday, January 30, you may send donations to school with your child or leave them on the Gift of Giving table in the WES entryway.
Please be sure to submit all contributions by Friday, February 10, so we can organize items for assembly.
We hope our students will not only have fun with this project, but also feel good about working together to help others, especially in a time where people are even more isolated than before. Please contact Sara O’Reilly, Aimee Tomaino Hodges, or Coco Kaminski with any questions. Thank you for your support!

Dear Families,
We were grateful to be able to gather together this morning for our annual assembly honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Our second grade students and staff worked so hard to put together a tribute to Dr. King through song, poetry, education and service to others. Thank you to the parents that were able to join us and our second grade team for your hard work!
Thank you, also, to everyone who has donated to our Chains of Love fundraiser. To date, we have raised $2,000 for the people of Pakistan. In the spirit of helping others, I would also like to remind you about the MLK Day of Service on Monday. Our own Mrs. Ryan will be on hand to lead students in making paper hearts to include with our clothing donations to Pakistan. A complete agenda for the day can be found here.
As we head into the weekend, please enjoy these short videos of our second graders and the entire school and staff united in song from this morning’s assembly:

Dear Families,
Happy New Year! I hope your break was restful. It was such a joy seeing the students return to school this week. We have returned to our learning routines and are now working through the Universal Screening process for students. This is when we check the progress of each student in reading and math, thus far, to see that they are making expected progress.
Speaking of progress, progress reports will be coming at the end of this month on or about January 27. This will be a chance for you to see how your child is progressing since our November conferences.
Finally, thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped with our rescheduled winter parties today! It was an awesome finish to our first week back! Also, thank you to the PTO for providing a wonderful “welcome back” lunch to teachers this past Tuesday. We are so thankful for the collaboration with our parent community.
WES truly is a family school where we create a peaceful learning environment where all are safe, respectful and responsible.
Have a great weekend,

Dear Families,
Can you believe we are heading into the last week of school for 2022? This month has marked the return of so many wonderful experiences for children from gingerbread house building, to field trips to the Helen Kate Furness Library to the return of our Winter Music concert.
A packed house of proud parents, family members and community came on Wednesday night to celebrate and enjoy the hard work of our students under the direction of Mrs. Haley and Mr. Greenhalgh. It was a wonderful evening of music.
Have a good weekend.

Dear Families,
Welcome to December! I hope you and your family had a restful and relaxing break. This week students and teachers returned to their routines, mostly, and picked up where we left off. Today we hosted our annual 4th grade Turkey Bowl with players, cheerleaders, announcers and more. Thank you to our 4th grade teachers and Instructional Assistants for keeping such a great tradition alive and the students for their preparation, hard work and fabulous 28-28 game!
Next week many across our nation will celebrate and participate in the Hour of Code event. This is where students have an opportunity to experience the thinking and implementation of sequences, patterns and literally program or code. We are so thankful at WES to have this activity run through our PTO with lots of parent participation. There are a few more spots available for parents to volunteer using the link below.
Finally, as we enter a very exciting time for students, teachers and families, I want to encourage everyone to embrace each day. Sometimes we get to a place where we “wish” we could skip to a certain date or event. One thing I’ve learned here at WES is each day counts and is important. I hope you enjoy the moments of each day starting with a wonderful weekend.
Thank you,

Dear Families,
What a week! Congrats to all of our students who participated in the first ever Adapted art show at the Delaware County Intermediate Unit! Thank you to Mrs. Ryan for entering the student’s artwork and families for coming out to view the pieces. Dr. Marseille and Dr. Sanberg were so thrilled to experience the event with everyone.
At WES we believe giving matters. Thank you to all of the families who participated in the food drive. We are thrilled to support restocking a local food bank. In addition, Mrs. Gaur’s Cookie Stand raised over $1,700 this year for the people of Pakistan. We did it together. Whether baking cookies, buying milk, helping to count money or donating, we made a difference.
Please take time to be with your loved ones and rest. I am so thankful to be in a community that values giving. Happy Thanksgiving to all who are celebrating.

Everyone did wonderfully and he was impressed!Over the next week or so we will conduct our first Lockdown Drill. This is a drill to rehearse how to respond to an intruder in the building. Some of the language teachers use to explain the drill to students include: We practice safety drills each month like fire drills. This drill is to practice being safe in the building. We also share that this drill could be used if there was a stray animal or adult without a visitor badge in the building. My goal as principal is to ensure all students and staff know what to do in each of our emergency situations so we are able to respond with confidence. Due to circumstances beyond our control, the production company had some mechanical issues with the blower required for the screen set up. The start of the movie was delayed due to waiting for a replacement blower to arrive. We were thankful for the beautiful weather, and by the sound of the kids’ laughter and the dancing blaze of glow sticks, it seemed that most families made the best out of the situation. This certainly was not how we planned or expected the evening to go. We know there are many challenges that come with balancing work schedules, family responsibilities and kids’ bedtimes and we thank you for your support. – Anne McFadden and Jen LaViola2022-2023 WES Student DirectoryThe 2022-23 WES Student Directory is still available to purchase here.
