Order Your School Supply Kit for Next Year - Now Through June 23!
The WES PTO is again offering school supply kits for sale for the 23-24 school year. This is a fundraiser for the PTO and each kit contains the necessary supplies for your child’s classroom/grade level and saves you a trip to the store! Kits will be waiting for your child in their classroom on the first day of school. Visit www.shopttkits.com and enter Account #63741 for more information and to place your order. Orders are due by Friday, June 23. Please contact Sarah Ponzio with any questions.
WES PTO Spring Appeal
Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the WES PTO Spring Direct Appeal! Our fundraising goal for this spring is $7,000, with $1,000 to support our upcoming tree planting project, which will surround the playground with some much needed shade. Students will have the opportunity to help plant and care for six shade trees, to grow along with them throughout their years at WES and beyond. The additional $6,000 will fund Mrs. Ryan's Artist in Residence project this fall with Philadelphia mural and street artist Amberella. Students will create collaborative hearts with messages of encouragement, hope, and love which will be displayed throughout the building to promote a feeling of belonging and connection within the school community.
Thank you for supporting these meaningful projects for our school and helping the PTO to provide a variety of enrichment experiences for our children! We greatly appreciate the kindness of our community, and are so grateful for all that we can accomplish together!
Calling all Student Artists!
The PTO Student Directory Committee is now accepting student artwork to be featured in the 2023-24 WES Student Directory, incorporating next year's theme - Time to Shine! The Student Directory includes a collection of student artwork throughout the pages, with a submission by a rising 5th grader selected for the cover. For more details, please see the form here. Artwork can be dropped off in the office at WES, or submitted to wespto.directory@gmail.com by August 11th. We're looking forward to seeing and sharing all of the wonderful student artwork!
Student Directory Advertisements
If you are interested in promoting your local business to the community, while also directly supporting the WES PTO, please consider placing a tax-deductible advertisement in the 2023-24 WES Student Directory! You can find more details and pricing here and ads should be submitted by August 11th to guarantee placement. Thank you for your consideration and support of the WES PTO! Please contact Christine Greco with any questions.

Parent Feedback Requested
We would like to share an opportunity for you to give the school your perspective and thoughts on your child’s strengths and optimal learning environment as part of our comprehensive placement procedure for next school year.
Currently, we follow a multi-layered process of reviewing data on achievement, social emotional growth, learning styles, group dynamics, social connections and more to create the best balanced learning environment for each student. We would like to add your feedback, should you desire to do so, by filling in this survey by Friday May 12th at 4:00pm. We welcome you to share with us three things about your child(ren) that you would like us to know and keep in mind as we work through the placement process. Please know that we do not accept teacher requests, but your feedback is important to us.
Spring Movie Night - TONIGHT- FRIDAY, MAY 5th!
Join us this evening for another fun outdoor movie night at WES! We will be showing the animated movie, Storks. We are excited to announce that Owl's Water Ice and Treats will be at WES for families to purchase treats to help sweeten the night. Remember to bring a comfy blanket/chairs for the show. This event is open to the entire family. If you plan on attending, please sign up here.

Spring Chorus Concert - Attention 5th Grade Families!
Your student is performing in the Spring Concert on Wednesday, May 10 here at WES! Yes, all 5th graders are singing for the school at a 1:50pm Assembly and again for you in the evening. The evening performance starts at 7 pm, but the students need to be here at 6:45 pm in the music room.
WHAT TO WEAR:
- Evening Concert: White tops and black bottoms with dark dress shoes.
- No jeans, sweats or sneakers please!
- Assembly Concert (during the school day): Tops without words/advertisements please!
The students have been working on this music since January and are looking forward to showing off all of their hard work. In order to make the concert a success we expect every student to attend and perform that evening. Sports practice or games do not count as an excuse to miss the concert. Please contact Mrs. Haley as soon as possible if there are any problems regarding this.
Your help in making our concert a success is greatly appreciated. We look forward to performing for you on the 10th!
WES May Day - Friday, May 12
WES May Day will take place on Friday, May 12th from 12:30pm to 3:00pm! Wristbands for students and siblings (which include unlimited games, two drinks, and three snacks) can be pre-purchased here for $12.00 per wristband, or for $15 from the May Day Ticket Booth. Please see the order form here for details and to purchase wristbands via cash or check. If scholarship is needed, please reach out to your child's teacher or Christine Greco and a complimentary wristband will be provided. Each wristband purchased helps to fund the event, and we greatly appreciate your support of this much-loved WES tradition! Wristbands will be distributed to all students on Friday, May 12th. Dear Families,
PSSA testing continues next week with math testing for grades 3-5 on Tuesday and Wednesday and science testing for grade 4 on Thursday and Friday. We encourage students to get a good night's sleep, eat breakfast, and arrive at school on time. Students who arrive late may not be able to participate in that day's session, so please be on time (our school day begins at 8:45am). Additionally, please try to avoid early dismissals during the mornings of PSSAs so testing is not disrupted for your student.
As we begin looking toward next school year, I would like to share an opportunity for you to give the school your perspective and thoughts on your child’s strengths and optimal learning environment as part of our comprehensive placement procedure.
Have a great weekend!

Dear Families,
Can you believe we have a little over two months of school left? I hope your Spring break was enjoyable and restful. With the arrival of warmer weather and the building anticipation for summer, it is important that we keep our focus on our peaceful learning environment. This week I asked teachers to review not only our common school expectations, but their specific classroom expectations as well.
Our school wide expectations are:
- Be respectful
- Be responsible
- Be safe
Below you can find our behavior matrix below to see what is being reviewed with your children:
The school rules were developed by the WES staff in adherence to the Pennsylvania Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support System. Our school rules are premised on three underpinnings of good citizenship: Respect for Self; Respect for Others; Respect for One’s Surroundings. We teach and reteach the expectations using an interactive modeling approach that comes from our Responsive Classroom training. This means teachers are talking with children about what these rules should “look like” and “sound like” at arrival time, in the hallways, at lunch and recess, and during all-school gatherings.
Please take some time to review these expectations and/or ask your child how they are doing with them at school. We encourage you to do the same with their academic studies!
Finally, my staff and I believe in the importance of keeping the lines of communication open and clear with our families. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns. We will also do our best to communicate both challenges and celebrations with you as we embrace this final stretch of the school year.
Thank you for your continued support and collaboration.

Attention 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Parents!
Please encourage your children to take part in the WES Science Fair on Wednesday, April 19 from 6-7pm. This event is entirely optional and intended to foster a love of science, and not intended to create any stress at home! Projects will not be officially judged—instead, fellow WES students and families will circulate with science passports engaging the students in discussions based on their experiments. All student scientists earn a homework pass for that night’s homework. Please see the attached flyer for more information on this event. Included is a list of ideas to spark your child’s interest. Parents, if your child wishes to participate, sign-up here.
WES Science Fair
Calling all WES families! Mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 19 from 6-7 pm for the WES Science Fair in the cafeteria. Instead of completing homework at home, earn a homework pass for that night’s homework while supporting 4th and 5th grade student scientists as they showcase their science fair projects. Upon arrival, WES students will be given a science passport that can be completed as they visit student scientists’ tables. Completed passports earn a homework pass for that night’s homework. Additionally, the PTO will run a few science tables. This is a PTO-run event and we are looking for volunteers to run the check-in table as well as the PTO-run science tables. You may sign-up to volunteer here. We hope to see you there and thank you for volunteering!
Jonathan Stutzman Author Visit
WES welcomed award-winning children's book author Jonathan Stutzman for a fun-filled and magical visit with our K-2 students on Wednesday morning! He read his new book in the Tiny T-Rex series, Tiny T-Rex and the Grand Ta-Da and taught the students how to whoosh their imaginary wands and draw their own Tiny T-Rex. Families can purchase signed books from the Tiny T-Rex series until this Sunday, April 16th.
During his visit, Jonathan shared about some of his favorite things (such as his dog Hugo and his childhood love of learning about dinosaurs) and how our interests can provide inspiration for creating stories and artwork. He also talked about how authors and illustrators work together as a team, and character traits such as kindness, which Tiny T-Rex shows throughout the series. The WES PTO was very happy to support this wonderful experience, and grateful to Jonathan Stutzman for joining us and to Children's Book World for the opportunity!
Spring Movie Night
Join us on Friday, April 28th for another fun outdoor movie night at WES! The movie will begin showing around dusk and the grounds will be open early for families to grab a spot on the grass. Remember to bring a comfy blanket/chairs and your favorite snacks/drinks to enjoy during the show. This is a free event open to the entire family. Stay tuned for more details. If you plan on attending, please sign up here.

Dear Families,
At WES, giving matters. Thank you to Mrs. Gaur’s class, parent volunteers and staff for helping the Lemonade and Pretzel Stand raise $2,235 for Turkey. Fantastic!
At WES, we are a family school. We are grateful for all of the parents/guardians that were able to join us for conferences this week. The home/school connection is essential to the success of our educational community.
At WES, a family school, we create a peaceful learning environment where all are safe, respectful and responsible.
In light of some of the tragedies that have been occurring in schools across the nation, most recently Tennessee, I find myself returning to the simple basic values and beliefs that brought me into the profession. It has become my anchor, my “why”, as we are faced with heart wrenching news that we can’t explain.
I believe each person has immeasurable value and something valuable to offer the world. Our ultimate goal in this educational community is to teach children how to learn and how they learn. We create a peaceful family learning community by building strong relationships with consistent and honest communication.
It is my hope that during this Spring Recess you take a little time to truly enjoy your family, anchor yourself on what matters most and recharge.
Thank you and have a wonderful break,

If you would like to purchase a signed copy of his book, while also supporting WES, please visit our special offer provided by Children's Book World here. All book orders will be distributed at WES and must be received by Wednesday, April 5th for personalization! The only magic trick Jonathan knows is how to make donuts (and other tasty foods) disappear. He lives in Pennsylvania, where right now he’s most likely reading or thinking about new stories. His work for children includes the bestselling Tiny T. Rex series as well as Llama Destroys the World, illustrated by Heather Fox, Bear Is a Bear, illustrated by Dan Santat, and many others.

Jump Rope For Heart 2023
Jump Rope For Heart is a fundraising activity sponsored by the American Heart Association. Students will exercise, earn thank you gifts, and have lots of FUN while raising money to help fight heart disease. All students can participate at their own pace.
Traditionally, we hold a school-wide Jump Rope For Heart event. This year’s event will take place on Friday, April 21, 2023.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO?
- If you choose, begin collecting money. Students must make safe choices if they raise money. DO NOT GO DOOR TO DOOR!!
- Fill out the front of the envelope with your name and contact information. (If you raise $50 then you have earned a t-shirt. Please check off your shirt size on the envelope. ***Sizes tend to run small***)
- If you prefer to raise money on-line, go to www.heart.org/KHC and follow the instructions on your Kids Heart Challenge envelope. Please print out and send in a receipt to Mr. C. for all on-line donations. (You must have your parent’s permission to raise on-line)
- Please convert all cash into checks made payable to: The American Heart Association
- Turn in all money and on-line donation receipts in the Kids Heart Challenge envelope by April 21, 2023.
- Jump and have FUN! Remember, there is NO pressure to raise money, and you are not buying any of the prizes. The prizes are thank-you gifts for your donation.
**The prizes are thank-you gifts issued by The American Heart Association and are based on the amount of money each student collects. Prizes normally take 4 to 6 weeks to be delivered.
Good luck and have fun. - Mr. Casamento
