Students are scheduled for world language all three years (German, French, Spanish. or Chinese) or are provided support services, as needed. Each learning support class for students with exceptional needs is small and highly individualized. Enrichment opportunities are provided all three years for gifted and talented students. Students also cycle through health, art, family and consumer science, music, computers, and industrial arts (wood and metal shop).
SHMS consistently ranks among the top schools in Delaware County in the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) achievement test results. Each team in the school meets twice a week to examine students’ progress, and a pro-active plan is designed and followed, with the aid of the guidance counselor, to assist each student in reaching his/her potential.
Homework clubs meet after school for those students who need additional support to complete their work. A Student Assistance Program (SAP) team meets regularly to evaluate how they may assist at-risk students and their families. A school psychologist is also on-site for testing and evaluation.
Over 75% of the students play one or more musical instruments and perform in a variety of musical groups or sing in the chorus. Drama and musical performances bring large numbers of students together to act or sing on the stage, build sets, set lights, make costumes, apply make-up, or serve on stage crews.
Student government connects students to the community through food drives and various fund raising and outreach programs. Additionally, each eighth grade student must complete a community service project. Volleyball, football, track, basketball, wrestling, baseball, and softball teams connect students with other students. School socials and fun nights are also scheduled throughout the year, and curricular field trips to places near and far enhance the learning process.
SHMS has a committed Home and School Association (see link above left) that provides a newsletter to parents and supports the school through various fund raising activities. It meets monthly in the school library and has a variety of committees on which interested parents may serve.
