What To Do When Your Child is Absent



Early dismissal:  Please send a note to school with your child if he or she is to be dismissed early.


Late arrivals:  Students arriving after 7:48 a.m. are considered tardy and must sign-in on the clipboard in the main office to receive a late pass to class.


Absences:  Parents are requested to report their child's absence by calling the SHMS school attendance line or emailing the attendance line any time before 8:00 a.m.  Automatic SchoolMessenger calls are made to parents if word of an absence is not received by that time.

Returning to school after an absence:  A written note from a parent or doctor is required upon the student’s return and should include the following information: the student's full name, the date of the absence, the reason for the absence, and the signature of parent/guardianNotes need to turned into the school within 3 days of an absence to excuse them.


For absences of 3 days or longer, a physician’s note is required in accordance with the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District Board policy. Current options for excusal note submission are: 

1) Physical notes brought to the school to be turned into the student's teacher (elementary) or attendance office

2) Pictures of handwritten notes with a signature attached to an email, addressed to the school attendance email line.
