New Year Update
Dear WSSD Community –
Happy New Year!
As we ring in 2021, we have a lot of reason to be hopeful for a much better year ahead. The past year has tested our community in ways we could not have imagined. While there have been many bumps along the way, our entire WSSD community – students, teachers, staff, and all of our families – has demonstrated tremendous resilience. We have seen a remarkable amount of flexibility, innovation, and downright determination to adapt to very difficult circumstances.
We still have a lot of challenges ahead of us. But we also have a lot of reason to be optimistic.
- Vaccines will soon make their way into our community
- A return to warmer weather in the spring will give us opportunities to be outdoors again
- We can begin to plan for the future when the threat from COVID will decrease
The timelines are highly uncertain. We don’t know how quickly vaccines will be widely available and we don’t know how long it will take to get past the winter surge in COVID-19 rates.
In 2021, we will also have a leadership transition. As Dr. Palmer previously shared, she will be retiring at the end of June. We thank her for her decade of service to the district and all that she has given – particularly over the past year.
The School Board has begun the search process. We interviewed search firms and at our last board meeting selected Judith Wilson, a former superintendent and search consultant. She has led many successful searches for districts in the region. We will ask you for your input through surveys and virtual focus groups to identify key attributes we will look for in our next district leader. Our goal is to identify a new superintendent to begin July 1, 2021.
We have a lot of work ahead of us. Thank you for all of your support and collaboration over the past year as we have weathered this pandemic together. The WSSD community is a special place and it is our teachers, staff, students, and families that are its backbone. We still have some tough months ahead but the turning of the calendar to 2021 can give us hope. The strength of our community and its collaborative spirit will allow us to emerge successfully from a very difficult year.
We wish you all the best for 2021!
