WSSD Puerto Rico Relief Efforts
In September, Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico. One of the hardest hit areas was the mountain regions. Located in the mountains of PR is the town of Orocovis. In the month since the storm, Orocovis is still without power, drinking water is scarce and many of the buildings in the area are still uninhabitable. Two of the schools in the area were also hit hard by the storm. While FEMA and other agencies are doing their best with recovery efforts, the kids of Orocovis need our help. We are asking the WSSD community to help restart the school year for over 600 K-12 students in the two schools in the town. Our goal is to provide each student in the town a schoolbag full of school supplies to help restart the year.
How can you help?
Each classroom is being asked to donate (at least) one new or gently used school bag and fill that bag with grade appropriate school supplies.
We are also asking each teacher to donate something for their colleagues in Orocovis. We will also accept cash donations and will purchase additional items.
Each building will collect supplies and school bags that are grade level appropriate. We will collect materials and work at the high school to sort and pack up the bags for shipping to Orocovis.
