Happy Summer!
Don’t forget to see what the PTO is up to, check out their Webpage!
Dear Wallingford Community,
What a difference a year makes! This week we celebrated our 5th graders as they leave us to join Strath Haven Middle School next year. We also had a wonderful PBIS end of year assembly where students and staff sang, danced and enjoyed being together one last time for the 21-22 school year. WES truly is a family school. Here we create a peaceful learning environment where all are safe, respectful and responsible.
This afternoon, around 4pm, you will receive your child’s progress report. This will come in an email directly to you. Below you will find a link to summer resources for your consideration.
Next year our school theme is “Be Courageous.” Please have a safe, relaxing and restful summer. All the best to you and your family.
Thank you,
Dr. Savage

WES Summer Reading
Reading is important and fun, even in the summer! Research tells us that children forget some of the skills they have learned when away from school over the summer months. Reading books will help reduce the “summer slide” that can occur when students do not read during the summer.
To encourage your child to continue reading this summer, we are sharing some reading activities. Visit our website to learn more.

Dear Wallingford Community,
I hope you had an outstanding week! Please join me in congratulating all of our 4th and 5th grade scientists who participated in our first ever Science Fair this past Wednesday. There were 17 exhibits by students and the thought process and work they put in was phenomenal. Thank you to the PTO Science Committee for organizing a very well run event. Well done all!
As we approach the last week of school the WES staff will continue to encourage students to enjoy the success of the year while maintaining our values of being safe, respectful and responsible. If you could please take a moment to remind your children that we are not in summer yet and still need to focus for one more week. We would greatly appreciate the support!
Have a wonderful weekend.
Thank you,
Dr. Savage

If you would like to hold on to some of those memories (pictures, work, recordings, etc.), you can download your students' Seesaw Journal. In order to download the journal you must have a Seesaw Family Account linked to your child and follow the directions on a computer. If you do not have a family account set up please contact your child's teacher. If you have any problems downloading the journal please contact helpdesk@wssd.org. Families have until the end of the day Sunday, June 20.

Lunch Menu
**As we head into the final few days of school, we are beginning to use up the remainder of our inventory. Please note that the menu is subject to change with little or no notice due to inventory shortages. In addition, options for each grade may vary.
As for a second option, we will not be providing a specific option. We hope to have a few different hot and cold items for the kids to choose from.
We expect to sell out of our snack inventory by Monday. Once they are gone, they are gone until next year. All money left on a student's account will roll over to next year. Fifth graders will use their same lunch accounts at the middle school and their money will be available for them there. Thank you!

High school parents and the township are sponsoring a car parade to celebrate the Class of 2022
Please spread the word and come out with your neighbors to celebrate the Class of 2022. For safety reasons, it is very important that an adult drives so the seniors can enjoy the parade as spectators. Please talk to your seniors about being safe and respectful - they shouldn't hang out of cars, sit on the roof or hood or in the back of pick-up trucks. Huge thanks to Kelly Wachtman and Matt Garson for facilitating productive conversations between the township, law enforcement, school and parents - without their help, the parade would not be happening, so please take a moment to thank them. The parade is scheduled for next Wednesday June 8 at 7pm. Cars may arrive in the high school parking lot beginning at 6:30pm.
Route:
- Left onto Brookhaven Road out of the SHHS parking lot via Allencrest Lane
- Left onto Moore Road
- Left onto Georgetown Road/Media Parkway at the Creekside Swim Club
- Right onto Meadow Lane and then crossing over 252/Providence Road and proceeding along E. Rose Valley Ave/Yale Ave into Swarthmore Borough
- Left onto 320/Chester Road
- Right onto Park Ave
- Parade ends in front of Swarthmore Borough Hall

Dear Wallingford Community,
This week has been a rollercoaster of emotions for many. I began it with a presentation to the WSSD Board of directors where Mrs. Ryan and I shared our school theme, Be Who You Were Made to Be, in the context of our school being a place where we strive to do fundamental things extraordinarily well. We shared that at Wallingford Elementary, a family school, we create a peaceful learning environment where all are safe, respectful, and responsible. The work of our students, staff, and parents was well received by all. A few days later the tragic and heart-breaking events from Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas was reported.
We met as a staff, through many tears, that morning to review our practice on how we respond when events like that occur. I wanted to share with you things that we do at WES to proactively avoid situations like this as well as how we support each other during these times.
That morning I met with my Emergency Team to review language for teachers to use before pulling the entire staff together to share. We talk about ensuring our students are seen, heard and loved. Why? In situations like this there is typically a mental health component. That is why we spend so much time creating a culture where students and staff feel connected with our school wide positive behavior systems of support and our responsive classroom morning meetings.
On the safety side, we practice our various drills each month of the school year, review feedback, success and areas for improvement at internal Emergency Team Meetings. This year, I have also attended several safety meetings with building principals, Central Office leadership and Chief Splain of the Nether Providence Police Department. We have reviewed and adapted safety procedures, discussed and implemented feedback from Mr. Randy Fox, who did a security and safety assessment of our buildings and received direct feedback from Chief Splain. All of this has been happening this year before this week, because we take the safety and security of your children very seriously.
As we move forward we thank you for your patience as we insist you have your license for us to scan into our Raptor system when visiting the building. We thank you for your understanding and your care as we continue to grow a peaceful learning environment where all are safe, respectful and responsible.
Thank you,
Dr. Savage

Dear Wallingford Community,
Have you ever danced in the rain? Today I watched one of our students get picked up early and dance to the car without a care in the world. They were happy, content and filled with joy. That is the sense I get when I consider the wonderful staff here at WES. They bring a sense of peace, structure and joy to their students that makes WES a special place. Thank you for every flower, card, balloon, breakfast dish, basket, and smile you provided for my staff this week. We could not be more thankful to be here with such a supportive parent community.
Speaking of community, it was such a joy to watch our 5th grade parents dance the night away with their children last night! Thank you to the 5th grade teachers and Mr. Casamento for all of your hard work to make the event come to life.

Wristbands can be purchased ahead of time online here or at the event. The cost is $12.00 per wristband if ordered in advance (or $15 on the day of the event). Thank you for your cooperation as we work to keep everyone safe and accounted for!

Dear Wallingford Community,
Welcome to the end of April! Students did a wonderful job this week completing the English Language Arts section of the PSSA this week. Next week we will complete math for grades 3, 4 and 5 and science testing for grade 4. We ask that students continue to be on time, well rested and ready to do their best.
Speaking of doing our best, I would like to share an opportunity for you to give the school your perspective and thoughts on your child’s strengths and optimal learning environment as part of our comprehensive placement procedure. Currently, we follow a multi-layered process of reviewing data on achievement, social emotional growth, learning styles, group dynamics, social connections and more to create the best balanced learning environment for each student. We would like to add your feedback, should you desire to do so, by filling in this survey by Friday May 13th. We welcome you to share with us three things about your child(ren) that you would like us to know and keep in mind as we work through the placement process. Please know that we do not accept teacher requests, but your feedback is important to us.
We are quickly approaching the end of another school year, which means there are many exciting events, such as May Day and Spring Book Fair for your children to look forward to! Please continue to stay updated on the events we share via this communication each week.
Thank you,
Mr. Savage

We encourage students to get a good night's sleep, eat breakfast, and arrive at school on time. Students who arrive late may not be able to participate in that day's session, so please on time. Additionally, please try to avoid early dismissals during the mornings of PSSAs so testing is not disrupted for your student.
Thank you,

Dear Wallingford Community,
We are so excited to share your child’s progress with you at conferences tomorrow Thursday April 7th and Friday April 8th. As a reminder, there is no school for students which allows our teachers to be available to review your child’s growth with your family.
Speaking of family, I am so thankful for the outpouring of support for our Ukrainian Refugee Drive. The WES community really came together to support people who needed it. The church where we dropped off the items was extremely grateful and appreciative of your generosity. The items will soon go to a staging area in Jenkintown before being placed on a plane to Poland where they will distribute items.
I would also like to thank everyone for supporting Mrs. Guar’s Class’ pretzel and lemonade stand which raised over $3,000 for Ukrainian Refugees in addition to the supplies we collected.
Each day I remind students that at WES we create a peaceful learning environment where all are safe, respectful and responsible. It has been such a joy watching as we attempt to be responsible global citizens.
Have a wonderful and safe Spring break.
Thank you,
Mr. Savage

Additionally, with input from the Chief of Police and Wallingford Elementary School administration, it has been decided that Kershaw Road will TEMPORARILY not allow any parking from 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday, in the interest of the safety of pedestrians and WES traffic.
The project is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 21 and continue for a few months. In order to minimize disruption to our carline pick up at the end of the day, please note the following:
- When picking up children in the carline, please pull as far forward as possible in the loop to limit the amount of cars lining up on the side streets.
- After pick up, you will be able to turn left out of the WES lot onto Kershaw, but then you must make a right onto East Possum Hollow Rd. You will not be able to turn left onto East Possum Hollow.
- For the first few days of the project, Nether Providence police officers will be stationed at the entrance/exit of the WES parking lot and also at the corner of Providence Road and East Possum Hollow Road to help direct the flow of traffic.
- Please be mindful of walkers and bikers as you enter and exit the parking lot.
We appreciate your patience as the township completes the sidewalk project and we work to get students home safely.

All items left unclaimed by spring break will be donated to charity.
WES Citizenship Project
“When you help someone up a hill, you’re that much nearer the top yourself.”
As part of Wallingford Elementary School’s ongoing citizenship project the WES Student Council is organizing a collection project to support the refugees in Ukraine. We have teamed up with Holy Myrrh-Bearer’s Ukrainian Church in Swarthmore, PA. They are sending relief supplies to the region weekly.
We will be collecting and sorting the items beginning on Tuesday, March 22nd and we will complete the relief drive on Tuesday, April 5th.
In order to make the collection process as easy as possible and to ensure that we will collect a variety of items, we have divided the contributions up by grade level. All items should be NEW and in their original packaging.
The following is a list of suggested items for each grade level:
- Grade K & 1: Protein Bars, Granola Bars, Gloves/Mittens (All Sizes), Baby Bottles, SD Cards
- Grade 2: Dried Foods, Wool Hats, Dry Baby Formula, Flash Drives
- Grade 3: Ramen Soup Cups/Packs, Socks (All Sizes), Diapers, First Aid Kits, Toothbrush & Toothpaste
- Grade 4: Hot Chocolate Packets, Thermal Underwear (All Sizes), Baby Wipes, Yoga Mats, Phone Chargers
- Grade 5: Raincoats/Ponchos (All Sizes), Bar Soap, Bandages of all types, Gauze, Microfiber Towels, Flash Lights
Everyone at WES is excited about this collection and looks forward to watching our lobby overflow with the famous generosity of the whole Wallingford family. Thank you in advance for your support!

The Art of WSSD
After a hiatus due to the pandemic, The Art of WSSD is back at the Community Arts Center! The Art of WSSD is our biennial exhibition of visual art from select students in grades K-12. It is a celebration of the creative artistic expression of the students of the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District. Art from all five WSSD schools is represented in the Duke Gallery at the Community Arts Center, from ceramics to photography to drawing, painting, and sculpture. A reception will be held on Sunday, March 27 from 2-4 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Simultaneously on display in the Lounge Gallery of the Community Arts Center is the George H. Slick Fellowship exhibition of Gabe Lawson, Class of 2022. Both exhibitions remain on display through Apr 29, 2022. Congrats to all of our artists!
A Message from the PTO Nominating Committee
The WES Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) serves as a place where parents and teachers have the opportunity to come together to communicate, share new ideas, solve problems and connect in our shared goal of enriching the elementary educational experience. You don’t need to join — as the parent or guardian of a WES student, you’re already a voting member and you’re always invited! We work together to supplement school academic programs with extracurricular events, activities, philanthropy and services because we want to help foster an engaging environment that supports our students' love of learning.
The PTO Nominating Committee is working to fill positions for the 2022-2023 school year and we welcome your input! Please complete this brief survey by March 25th if you are interested in being involved in any way, big or small:
2022-2023 WES PTO INTEREST FORM
Completing the survey is not a commitment or guarantee of a PTO position, simply an expression of interest so that the Nominating Committee can reach out to discuss your availability to participate now or in the future. All of our job descriptions are listed and reflect the estimated time commitment and responsibilities for each position. There is also space for you to indicate any additional time or talents you would be willing to lend to the PTO. We appreciate your contributions, ideas or feedback and sincerely look forward to your response!
Thank you for supporting the PTO to help make WES a vibrant community where all students thrive and our families feel connected.
The Re-Prize Drive is Back!
From March 21st through April 6th, the WES Sustainability Committee will be collecting like-new and gently used small toys and trinkets. Backpack charms, keychains, bouncy balls, arcade and dentist office prizes, novelty pencils and erasers--you get the idea. Now is a great time to clear out the bottom of the toy bin or wherever these items collect in your house.
Your items will be given new life in our May Day prize booth, helping reduce the amount of new consumption needed to provide May Day prizes while helping you declutter at the same time! Our last collection provided May Day prizes and stocked the WES Holiday Shop last November.
Please click here for full donation guidelines before contributing. Questions? Feel free to reach out to Erin Stancill, Katie Boland, Arianne Allan or Andrea Nuschke.
WES Crayon Drive - March 21 - April 6
Got some old, broken crayons lying around the house? Donate them to the WES Crayon Drive!! After a successful collection last year, the WES Sustainability Committee is again collecting used crayons for The Crayon Initiative. The Crayon Initiative will melt and re-form the used crayons to make new crayons that will be donated to hospitals across the country. Donations can be dropped in the bins in the front lobby from March 21st to April 6th. If you have questions, please email Katie Boland, Erin Stancill, Arianne Allan, or Andrea Bowen.
Mental Health Resource Night - Monday, April 18, 6-9pm
Parents, come join us for a night of informational and educational presentations on how to manage your child’s most challenging behaviors and emotions. Be aware, know the signs, and learn some strategies! Light refreshments will be served. View the flyer for full details.
Trauma Invested Practices for Families
As part of WSSD’s Parent Engagement Series on Trauma Invested Practices, the district is offering this unique training session on Wednesday, March 23 at 6pm. Learn how you can help your child (grades K-5) cope with the big and small changes that may occur within any family. The focus of the session will be on how to help children handle change—both the big changes (divorce, new sibling, family illness, new school) and the little changes (new drop-off/pick-up routine, change in a parent/guardian work schedule). Help to create routines and rituals that offer a sense of safety and security. Learn how to reduce your child’s stress and teach them how to thrive when change happens. Click here for full details.

22-23 Strath Haven Middle School World Languages
Dear Parents and Guardians of current Fifth Grade Students,
As part of their transition to Strath Haven Middle School, fifth-grade students in the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District are asked to select a world language. The program offerings are French, German, Mandarin, and Spanish. Each language is offered every day for the entire year in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. In making this choice, students are making a three-year commitment to study the chosen world language. Upon entering high school, students are encouraged to continue with the study of their chosen language. This gives them the opportunity to begin a level two course upon entering high school. They may, however, opt to pursue another language at the high school level. Read more and complete the form for your student’s language selection.

Dear Wallingford Community,
I hope you and your family are well!
This week I was able to observe students completing projects on Native Americans/Indigenous people. They were studying and reporting on their clothing, art, food and housing. Lessons on sinking and floating (density and buoyancy) in science and converting fractions to decimals were also being taught and learned this week. It is truly a joy watching the teaching and learning process in action.
Please note that the E. Possum Hollow Road Side Project will begin on March 21st. Directions on how this will impact our arrival and dismissal are below.
