Welcome to our classroom. We are in Room 309 of the 3rd floor. The 3rd grade wing runs along Princeton Avenue.
This is my 36th year of teaching and my 30th at SRS, which has been a particular delight. After graduating from Swarthmore College in 1983, I spent two years teaching and studying at Bank Street College of Education in Manhattan, where I also received my Master of Science degree in Elementary Education. In 1985, I married and moved to Buffalo, where I spent four years teaching. After moving back to the Philadelphia area, I spent a year teaching at Westtown Friends School. It was after that year that I began working at SRS in my current position.
I believe that children are inherently motivated learners. At this age, concrete experiences are important, as they provide a bridge for abstract thought. They should be provided with many different modes for taking in information and expressing their learning. All of this needs to be provided in a safe, caring atmosphere where each student feels positive about his/her efforts and empowered to take risks.
