Welcome to the Office of the Superintendent
The Wallingford-Swarthmore School District is thrilled to welcome Dr. Russell D. Johnston as our new Superintendent, starting May 1, 2025. With a lifelong passion for education and a deep commitment to student success, Dr. Johnston brings a wealth of experience in leadership, special education, and instructional support.
Dr. Johnston joins us after serving as Acting Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education, where he worked closely with schools and communities to enhance learning opportunities for all students. Throughout his career, he has been dedicated to fostering inclusive, supportive, and high-achieving school environments. His leadership has focused on empowering educators, strengthening student services, and building collaborative partnerships with families and the community.
Before stepping into state-level leadership, Dr. Johnston was the Superintendent of West Springfield Public Schools, where he led district-wide improvements in teaching and learning. He has also served as a Special Education Director and an Instructional Support Leader, always advocating for student-centered policies and practices.
Dr. Johnston holds a bachelor’s degree in education from DePaul University, as well as a master’s and doctorate in education from Boston College. He and his family are excited to become part of the Wallingford-Swarthmore community, and he looks forward to working alongside students, educators, families, and community members to ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive.
