How do you go about figuring out the possible themes of a story?

    1.)  First, finish your text.

2.)  Create a list of topics.  (love, friendship, family, imagination, perseverance, lying, death...)

3.)  Pick 2-3 topics and write a sentence about each.  Begin with the words "The author believes that...."  (Do NOT be vague and do NOT use characters names!)

(Example:  The author believes that it is important to tell the truth in difficult situations.)

4.)  Cross out the words "The author believes that...."  and there you have possible themes of the book!

(It is important to tell the truth in difficult situations.)

5.)  Finally, choose the best theme that can be supported by TEXT EVIDENCE!!  Use that theme for  your essay.
