Dear Strath Haven High School Community:
With such beautiful weather today it is hard to imagine the cold is returning tomorrow! Despite the declining temperature, we are beginning to feel the excitement of new growth here at the high school. Today concludes the 2022 - 2023 course registration for students in grades 9-11. This process always provides us with the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations about our students’ goals and dreams for the future. This week we also had our first neighborhood council meeting between students and administration. The council is comprised of students from a variety of backgrounds who live in various geographic areas in our district. The goal is to engage in conversations about our school which can translate into growth opportunities for our entire student body. At our next meeting we will be discussing sportsmanship! Lastly, we hosted an orientation event for our 8th grade parents last evening. It was exciting to interact in-person with the next group of SHHS families!
Have a great weekend,
Dr. Hilden

Dear Strath Haven High School Community:
Today mid-quarter progress reports were mailed for any student earning a 70 or below in a course. Communication is essential to give students the best possible chance of improving their grades before the end of the quarter. Therefore, teachers will be contacting parents of students who have a grade below 70 in their classes by the end of next week.
This week our building experienced a couple of medical emergencies. When a student or staff member requires emergency medical attention during the regular day, the building enters into a “teach in place” mode. Essentially, instruction continues as normal and everyone is asked to remain in their current location until the emergency is resolved. This practice is employed in order to allow medical personnel to operate in the building without obstruction as well as to protect the privacy of the individual. I am happy to share that our students and staff responded appropriately which allowed the protocol to serve its intended purpose.
Have a great weekend,
Dr. Hilden

Dear Strath Haven High School Community:
Beginning with this marking period, we will be sending a mid-quarter progress report via mail for any student earning a 70 or below in a course. Grade reports will be pulled and mailed to you at the end of next week. Communication is essential to give students the best possible chance of improving their grades before the end of the quarter. Therefore, teachers will be contacting parents of students who have a grade below 70 in their classes by the end of next week.
This week SHHS held two great events, the Chris King Scholarship Tournament and the Black History Month assembly. As I mentioned last week, the assembly was completely organized and presented by students in the YAC club. Presenting in front of your class can be challenging but presenting at an assembly of your peers is an entirely different level of difficulty. I am so proud of our student presenters for their courage and skill. I am equally proud of the entire student body who participated in the most respectful manner. Part of the presentation included a video which I am sharing here. I hope you find a few minutes to listen to the voices of our students.
Have a great weekend,
Dr. Hilden

Dear Strath Haven High School Community:
Although school was closed today for students, our teachers and staff were present for a staff development day. In the morning all staff participated in an extensive Suicide Prevention Training. During the afternoon the focus was on curriculum development, departmental collaboration, and a data review of our students' first semester performance.
Next Tuesday we are excited to host a school wide assembly created by students from our Y.A.C. group to celebrate Black History Month. (This assembly was rescheduled from last Tuesday) The assembly will include a student generated video and a student cultural performance. I hope to share the amazing video in next week’s communication.

February 4, 2022
Dear Strath Haven High School Community:
As February 7th is next Monday, it is important to review the latest information about our potential shift to mask-optional at SHHS with your children. Masking policies have generated a continuous debate and resulted in a variety of opinions among our students, staff, and community. Therefore it is important to be familiar with the most current Health and Safety Plan employed by the school district.
Dr. Marseille’s district communication which was sent on 1/28/22 indicated the most recent CHOP policy update of January 27th, COVID-19 Outlook: Recovery Continues, But Some Regions Lag Behind, stated that we continue to see a decrease in COVID-related incidence and hospitalization rates across the country.
As of this morning, SHHS remained below the 2% incident rate for the 14 consecutive days required for the shift to mask-optional. Although the numbers have not significantly increased since this morning, an official determination will not be made until the numbers are reviewed at the end of today. Therefore, our masking status will be communicated via Dr. Marseille’s weekly communication later today. If a student or staff member should experience increased anxiety or encounter any difficulties, please do not hesitate to seek support from a counselor or administrator.
Have a great weekend,
Dr. Hilden

Dear Strath Haven High School Community:
With only a week remaining prior to the winter break, our school is as busy as ever. Despite the social media concerns outlined in Dr. Marseille’s communication yesterday, our students and staff were engaged in learning today.
I spent time in several science classes this morning. In AP Biology class, the students were utilizing the scientific discovery process using Vernier technology. Vernier provides our students with the experience of using innovative and advanced data-collection technology to explore science in new ways. The students utilize laptops with LoggerPro software to gather data in real-time through a variety of sensors attached to interfaces. I also spent some time learning about angular momentum in an AP Physics class, and all of the administrators enjoyed viewing our students’ current artwork which is being displayed in the Wall of Honor lobby.
These classroom experiences coupled with the staff’s participation in ugly sweater day, nurses' engagement in student vision screenings outside my office and various other activities all contributed to the feeling of a normal Friday. I am thankful for these experiences and appreciate that our students and staff found ways to remain engaged in the learning process. We are looking forward to a continuation of these typical experiences next week.
Have a great weekend,
Dr. Hilden

PHEAA December Financial Aid Webinars
Covering the Gap: Pieces of the Puzzle to Help Pay Your Education Bill
Understanding education balances can be confusing. Whether you’re trying to address the costs or beginning to plan for higher education, this review is for you. Join PHEAA representatives Linda Pacewicz and Daniel Wray for a 1-hour webinar that will emphasize best practices (such as seeking grants and scholarships first), remind families about additional resources (such as payment plans), and review private/alternative loans as a last resort in the process of covering the gap and keeping balances affordable. The discussion will also include the basics of credit, what factors impact a credit score, how can a credit score be improved, and the effects on your borrowing capability. December 14th, 6:30 pmUnderstanding the Offer Letter and Balances
The “Offer Letter” or “Financing Plans” that you receive provide an idea of the costs associated with attending a postsecondary institution and can be confusing because each school formats their information differently. PHEAA, represented by Linda Pacewicz and Daniel Wray of PA Forward Student Loan Program, will assist you in this 1-hour webinar in understanding and navigating through the types of aid that are listed, what you are being offered, identifying the balances, and next steps needed so you can make knowledgeable and affordable decisions. Q&A interaction is encouraged. December 16th Noon
