• WSSD CHROMEBOOK Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: How do I contact the district for help with my district provided Chromebook?

You can always reach the WSSD Technology Department via email at helpdesk@wssd.org or helpdesk@wssdgmail.org.  If you do not have access to email, you can leave a message at 610-892-3470 x5100.  If you are a student using your WSSDGMAIL.org Gmail address, you can only email helpdesk@wssdgmail.org

Q: How do I connect my district owned Chromebook to my home network?

Before logging into the Chromebook while off campus, connect to your home wireless network by clicking on the wireless icon next to the time in the bottom right corner.  When you are in a WSSD school, your Chromebook will automatically connect to the districts network.

Q: Can I log into my personal email account on my Chromebook?

The recommendation is to only use your WSSDGMAIL.org account on the district Chromebook.  Logging into other accounts may result in slow speeds and the inability to access school work asigned to your WSSDGMAIL.org account.  If you need to check other email, make sure you log out of all personal accounts in Google Chrome before accessing your school work.

Q: What do I do if my Chromebook will not turn on?

Sometimes Chromebooks can get stuck in the power off state. Turn the Chromebook off if necessary (hold the power button to shut down the Chromebook).  With it off, hold both the Escape and Refresh (the circular arrow key above the'4' key) buttons down at the same time. With your other hand, press the power button, and then let go of all 3.  This should boot the Chromebook into recovery mode.  This normally takes 30 seconds to boot.  Once the recovery screen is showing, you can hold the power button to turn it off and then press power again to turn it back on.

Q: Why is my Chromebook running slow?

If your Chromebook or Google Apps are slow, you may be having an issue with the proxy pop-up or you may have multiple accounts logged in.  The quickest solution is to remove your account from the Chromebook.  This will wipe locally saved data and settings, but will NOT remove anything saved in Google Drive, Gmail, etc.  To remove your account, sign out of the Chromebook, click on the downwards pointing arrow next to your name, and click Remove this user. You will need to click on Yes to confirm.

Q: I need a website for school work, but the website is blocked.  Why is it blocked?

Our filter uses an algorithm that is used to categorize site. Sometimes this algoritthm incorrectly categorizes a site.  If the site is needed for educational purposes, we can change the category on the filter to allow it for students.  If the site is not educational, it will remain blocked.  If you need access to a site for school, you may submit the site for review directly from the blocked page.  The site will be reveiwed and allow if deemed appropriate.  Social media sites are will remain blocked.

    Q: Why can't I access certain videos on YouTube.com?

Our filter allows us the use of YouTube while blocking videos that are inappropriate for school.  If a video isn't categorized by our filter, it is blocked as a fail-safe.  Teachers have the ability to submit videos to our help desk for review.  We will allow any video submitted by a teacher that is deemed educational.

Q: Why can't I install certain Google Chrome extensions or apps?

The Chrome Web Store has hundreds of thousands of extensions and apps available.  Per policy, we block all extensions and apps.  We then add certain extensions and apps to an allow list.  The allowed list is vetted for educational purposes and needs to be approved before adding additional items.  If there is an extension or app that is needed for class work, please have your teacher submit the request through helpdesk@wssd.org.

Q: What do I do if I lost my Chomebook charger or it is broken?

Students are responsible for the replacement of lost/damaged Chromebook charging plugs. Replacement chargers must be purchased from www.dell.com or the SHHS School Store (approximately $60). Compatible or refurbished replacement charger cannot be accepted and may not be safe.
