• Being a new teacher at a school is very hard because nobody knows much about you. However, the members of the paw print decided to try to get to know some of the new teachers better. For our first issue, we wanted to feature…
    Mr. Stratton!

Have you always been a teacher/guidance counselor?
This is a great question! My Career Portfolio is quite full of various positions held. I have been a Waiter, Dishwasher, Lawn Mower, Retail Worker, Resident Assistant at The University of Southern Maine, Mailroom Worker, Instructional Technologies Media Services Supervisor, Commercial Painter, Construction Laborer, Thrift Store Worker, Community House Leader, School-Based Program Coordinator, Substitute Teacher, Counseling Intern, Mobile Psychiatric Rehabilitation Worker, Mental Health Supervisor, and then I became a School Counselor. Seems like a lot doesn’t it? The lesson here is that everything you do can be a building block for your future. Get out there and have fun trying new things!

Do you have a favorite food when grading or working on student work?
I love how unique this question is. My favorite food to munch on while working is a nice crunchy kale salad with some greek yogurt and protein.
Are you liking SHMS so far? What is your favorite part?
I couldn’t ask for a better place to work. SHMS is full of wonderful people! The students are eager to learn, kind to one another, and willing to step out of their comfort zone to make a positive impact on the school. And as an added bonus, the teachers are pretty awesome too! Overall I have been welcomed into the school with big smiles and a whole lot of support! I look forward to all of the experiences that are to come over the next few years.

Did you always see yourself being a teacher/counselor? What else would you want to be?
I would say that I grew the desire to be a School Counselor around the age of 15. However, when I began looking at colleges to attend, I realized that becoming a School Counselor meant that I would have to obtain my Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree. Let’s just say that six years of school didn’t sound very fun to me at the time. I decided that I would go to school to earn a degree in Criminology and become a Maine State Trooper (I lived in Maine at the time). I eventually realized that being a State Trooper wasn't for me. So after graduating with my degree in Criminology I moved from Maine to Philadelphia to volunteer in local schools and lead a community house. After a few years of working in various fields of work, I decided that my dream of becoming a School Counselor was absolutely worth the time and I began a Master’s of School Counseling program at Eastern University; and I am so glad that I did!
Is there anything else that you would like us to know about you?
I love School Counseling and I am so happy that I have the opportunity to work with the students, teachers, administrators, and stakeholders of SHMS!
