Instrumental Music 6th Grade Orchestra (Mr. Shaull): Thursdays from 7:15 AM – 7:45 AM This ensemble is for all 6th grade students who play the violin, viola, cello, and string bass. This ensemble studies and performs a wide variety of styles and genres. The 6th grade orchestra performs at the Winter and Spring Fine and Applied Arts Concerts. 6th Grade Chamber String Ensemble (Mrs. Van Druff) This small, select group is comprised of students who study their instruments privately and seek to play additional repertoire of a more challenging nature. Only students who are members of the 6th Grade Orchestra are eligible to audition for this ensemble. 7th and 8th Grade Orchestra (Mr. Shaull ): Mondays from 7:15 AM – 7:45 AM 7th/8th Grade String Ensemble (Mrs. Van Druff ): Mondays from 2:30 PM – 3:05 AM This select group of string students performs repertoire of a more challenging nature. Repertoire includes Mozart quartets, Holst suites, opera overtures, etc. The ensemble performed at the State Capitol in March 2009 as part of a month-long Music in Ours Schools celebration. 6th Grade Band (Mr. Pearlberg): Music Day 2 from 7:00 AM – 7:45 AM 7th Grade Band (Mr. Pearlberg): Music Day 1 from 7:00 AM - 7:45 AM This ensemble is for all 7th grade students who play band instruments. This band performs for the Winter and Spring Fine and Applied Arts Concerts. The ensemble also performs with all of the middle school and high school bands at Band Night in October. 8th Grade Band (Mr. Pearlberg): Music Day 3 from 7:00 AM - 7:45 AM This ensemble is for all 8th grade students who play band instruments. This band performs for the Winter and Spring Fine and Applied Arts Concerts. The ensemble also performs with all of the middle school and high school bands at Band Night in October. Basie Jazz Band (Mr. McLaughlin) Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 PM – 3:05 PM This group of students is selected through audition in the Fall. Performances include the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District Jazz Night, student assemblies, and the 6th grade Academy Awards. Ellington Jazz Band (Mr. Pearlberg): Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 PM – 3:05 PM This group of students is selected through audition in the Fall. Performances include Wallingford-Swarthmore School District Jazz Night, student assemblies, and various local middle school jazz festivals. In addition to the performing ensembles, group music lessons - both choral and instrumental - are available to all students. Lessons are held once each week during the school day, on a rotating period schedule. Students who wish to join our performing ensembles are encouraged to contact the appropriate member of the music department faculty for information about schedules, lessons, and/or starting to play a musical instrument. |
