OVERVIEW

The overarching goal of the eighth grade reading program is to promote reading achievement. Instruction will be provided in word recognition skills and comprehension strategies. Opportunities to employ multiple active reading and learning strategies to construct new meaning of text will be provided. Students are encouraged to engage in independent reading both in the classroom and at home.

  • To develop a repertoire of reading and learning strategies
  • To encourage positive attitudes toward reading

METHODS and OBJECTIVES   (
Depending on individual student needs)

  • Review and provide regular practice in identifying sound-symbol relationships through application of phonetic principles and structural analysis of language.
  • Introduce essential reading skills to include before, during, and after reading strategies.
  • Provide ongoing opportunity for guided practice and independent application of reading and learning strategies.
  • Encourage students to focus on meaning as they read to self-correct and self-monitor ongoing comprehension.
  • Introduce strategies for content area reading and informational text.
  • Require students to read independently on a regular basis and to construct responses to what has been read.
  • Read aloud to students, encouraging them to interact with the text.

REQUIREMENTS

The following materials should be brought to class each day:

  • One or more pencils
  • Student Agenda assignment book
  • Book for independent reading (Sustained Silent Reading)

All other materials will be provided.

 

Students are expected to read independently throughout the school year, both in school and at home. Books may be signed out of the classroom library, school library, local libraries, or may be obtained at home.

 

 

DAILY HOMEWORK

Students are required to read for a minimum of 30 minutes each day.

 

 
GRADING

Students will earn points based on their homework, evaluations, in-class assignments, and class participation. Opportunities for extra credit will be provided throughout the year.
