6th Grade General Music       cowbell
6th grade music is focused on multicultural music and cultures.  We take a close look at music from many different cultures including China, Japan, Africa, Brazil, and the U.S.  This course lasts for one trimester.  After that students move on to physical education and art.

Listening:  Students listen to music from different cultures and reflect on what they hear through written journal entries.  This allows students to actively listen to culturally diverse music and prepare themselves to perform and compose music in that style.

Performing:  Students will perform many styles of music on instruments like the djembe, talking drum, surdo, cowbell, shaker, gong, cymbals, etc...

Reading and Notating:  Students will read rhythms and pitches in order to perform the given music.

Composition:  Students will be asked to compose many different pieces of music.  Some examples may be rhythms only and others will include both rhythms and pitches on the staff.  Students will write their own music with consideration to the culture or country we are studying.

Guitar:  Students will receive a 4-week introduction to guitar.  During that time we will focus on proper playing technique, forming and playing chords, reading and performing tablature, and composing music in both of those forums.
